Most good ovens have the broiling feature in them. Broiling is nothing but cooking your food for a very short time but with very high heat. Most cooking is done between 150 and 200 ° C while the temperature needed to broil your food would be anywhere between 500 and 600 ° C. This kind of temperature is very difficult to achieve and not many mini ovens give you this feature, although the larger ones usually do.
The toaster ovens are usually used for short duration cooking or warming and not all of them come with this feature. It is basically meant for you to toast your bread or sandwich, warm your food, cook small portions and things like that. The toaster ovens that come with this feature cost a little more than the simple ones. For example DeLonghi comes out with really good 4 slice toaster oven broiler for around $ 60 which is about $ 20 or $ 30 more than the simple ones in the market.
A toaster oven broiler however is good if you are living alone or are very busy that you almost never use your main oven. Having a smaller one is good because it gets your job done faster and for many of us time is the only thing that matters.
It is however good to decide before hand if you really need the broiling option. Broiling is a smoky business, especially if you like your food with a little bit of butter or fat, and if you are not careful and stop watching your food, you will get only burnt cinders. The temperature is also so high that you will need to use special broiling pans when you cook your food, as well as a special broiling tray inside the oven.
If you do not use the broiling option much, it is a good idea to just get the toaster oven. It is much cheaper and will serve most of your needs too. You can even cook your food in it and the only option that you do not have will be this. Some of them even come with the toaster oven with toaster option which gives you two slots on the top that you can use to toast your bread. Check them out before making your decision.
